Surface Pattern Design 101: How to Prepare Digital Art for Seamless Textile Printing

A pattern can look perfectly seamless on a tablet and still produce a faint line every 30 centimetres once it reaches fabric.

That usually is not a printer developing a personal grudge against your artwork. It is more often a tile boundary, stray pixel, incorrect scale or colour-profile problem that only becomes obvious when the design repeats across several metres.

Preparing artwork for digital textile printing by the metre requires more than exporting a large JPEG. The file must tell the printer exactly how large the design should be, where the repeat begins and ends, and how its colours should be interpreted.

This guide covers the complete workflow for Procreate and Adobe Illustrator: resolution, colour profiles, repeat mathematics, bounding boxes, fabric behaviour and the final production file.

One technical distinction matters here: digital artists often say DPI, but raster-file resolution is more accurately measured in pixels per inch, or PPI. DPI refers to the physical printer’s dots. The terms are frequently used interchangeably in software, but your artwork decision is ultimately about how many source pixels exist at the final printed size.

1. Decide the physical pattern scale first

Do not begin with β€œa large canvas.” Begin with a measurement.

A 3,600 Γ— 3,600-pixel tile could print beautifully at 30.48 cm and 300 PPI, or at 60.96 cm and 150 PPI. It is the same file, but the printed motifs become twice as large.

Use this calculation:

Round sensibly while maintaining the same physical proportions.

For a detailed 30 cm repeat containing fine linework, begin around 3,543 Γ— 3,543 pixels at 300 PPI. If the pattern contains large, painterly shapes designed to be viewed from a distance, the production team may approve a lower effective resolution.

Changing only the PPI label does not create detail. A 1,000-pixel image remains 1,000 pixels wide until it is resampledβ€”and resampling estimates new pixels rather than recovering missing information.

2. Use 300 PPI as the working master

For raster artwork, 300 PPI at final size is the safest working master because it preserves flexibility for detailed prints and smaller product applications.

A production export between 150 and 300 PPI may be acceptable depending on:

  • The fabric

  • The intended viewing distance

  • The size of the motifs

  • The printing method

  • The original artwork quality

  • The printer’s RIP workflow

Fine botanical lines, miniature characters and detailed illustrations need more source information than broad geometric shapes.

Vector artwork created in Illustrator is resolution-independent until raster effects, photographs, textures or brushes containing raster data are introduced. Check those linked and embedded elements separately.

Do not upscale at the end

Turning a 72 PPI file into β€œ300 PPI” without changing its pixel dimensions simply reduces its physical print size. Enlarging it through resampling may make the dimensions bigger, but it cannot reconstruct authentic brush texture or line detail.

Create the original canvas close to its intended output size.

3. Work in RGB unless a production profile says otherwise

A screen displays colour using red, green and blue light. Textile printers use inks and a RIPβ€”Raster Image Processorβ€”to translate the file into the printer’s available ink set.

This does not mean every textile file should be converted to a generic CMYK profile.

Generic CMYK profiles are normally built around specific paper, press and ink conditions. Those conditions may have little in common with sublimation ink on polyester fabric.

For most creator submissions:

  1. Work in a known RGB colour space.

  2. Embed the colour profile.

  3. Use sRGB when no printer-specific profile has been supplied.

  4. Retain an untouched RGB master.

  5. Convert only when a production profile or written specification is provided.

  6. Order a physical test before committing to more fabric.

Display P3 can contain vivid colours outside the printable range of the selected textile process. Those colours may be compressed or shifted during output. P3 is useful as a creative working space, but it does not guarantee a more vibrant textile.

In Procreate, select the colour profile when creating the canvas. In Adobe applications, use Convert to Profile when a genuine conversion is required. Assigning a different profile changes how the existing colour numbers are interpreted; it does not perform the same controlled translation.

4. Understand the anatomy of a seamless repeat

A seamless pattern tile has four mathematical relationships:

  • The left edge must continue exactly into the right edge.

  • The top edge must continue exactly into the bottom edge.

  • Motifs crossing a corner must repeat across both axes.

  • The final tile dimensions must remain unchanged after export.

If the tile is 3,600 pixels wide, any motif crossing the left boundary must have an identical copy positioned exactly 3,600 pixels to the right. The same rule applies vertically.

Moving it 3,599 or 3,601 pixels creates a mismatch. It may look tiny on one tile, but the error becomes a visible line across repeated yardage.

Seamless repeats do not use ordinary bleed

A finished repeat tile should end at its exact repeat boundary. Adding arbitrary bleed outside the tile can create doubled motifs or unintended bands.

Placed artwork is different. Artwork made for a finished productβ€”such as a cushion, tote bag or blanketβ€”may require bleed and a safe area around seams, folds or cutting lines.

Keep these two specifications separate:

  • Repeat tile: exact repeating boundary

  • Placed product artwork: template, bleed and safe zone

5. Preparing a seamless pattern in Procreate

Procreate is raster-based, so canvas size and pixel count need to be established before detailed painting begins.

Step 1: Build an even-numbered canvas

Use an even-numbered canvas such as 3,600 Γ— 3,600 pixels. Even dimensions make half-width and half-height movements easier and reduce alignment ambiguity.

Set:

  • The intended pixel dimensions

  • 300 PPI for the master

  • sRGB unless another profile has been supplied

Step 2: Keep a layered master

Keep motifs, background and texture on separate layers or groups. Duplicate the artwork before testing the repeat so the original remains editable.

Step 3: Create the offset copy

Flatten only the duplicated test version. Duplicate that flattened layer into four copies.

With Procreate’s snapping guides enabled, move the copies towards the four corners so the original outside edges meet in the centre of the canvas. The new central join exposes any gaps or awkward motif collisions that were previously hidden at the outer edges.

Merge the test copies and repair the centre without altering the canvas dimensions.

Step 4: Inspect every edge

Zoom into the top, bottom, left and right boundaries. Check for:

  • Partially transparent pixels

  • Tiny background-colour differences

  • Soft brush halos

  • Texture layers that stop at the boundary

  • Motifs that appear twice or disappear

  • One-pixel alignment shifts

Step 5: Test the tile in a 3 Γ— 3 grid

A single tile cannot reveal rhythm problems.

Create a new test canvas and repeat the tile three times horizontally and vertically. Inspect it at full scale and from a distance. Look for unintended stripes, obvious empty channels, crowded intersections and motifs that create diagonal β€œrivers.”

The tile may be mathematically seamless and still feel visually repetitive. Both tests matter.

6. Preparing a seamless pattern in Illustrator

Illustrator offers a more controlled workflow for vector repeats.

Method one: Pattern Options

  1. Select the motifs.

  2. Choose Object β†’ Pattern β†’ Make.

  3. Set the tile type: Grid, Brick by Row, Brick by Column, Hex by Row or Hex by Column.

  4. Enter an exact width and height.

  5. Review the live repeat preview.

  6. Check overlap order where motifs cross.

  7. Save the pattern swatch.

  8. Test it inside a large rectangle.

Method two: Manual bounding box

For manual pattern swatches, create a rectangle matching the exact tile dimensions. Copy it behind the artwork and give the back rectangle no fill and no stroke.

That backmost rectangle defines the repeat boundary.

Any artwork crossing an edge must be copied by the tile’s exact width or height. A motif crossing the top-left corner needs corresponding copies at the top-right, bottom-left and bottom-right positions.

Retain the editable AI master. Export only after checking linked images, raster effects, clipping masks and transparency.

7. Choose the right repeat structure

Not every design should use a basic grid.

Repeat type Best suited to
Grid Geometric designs, checks, stripes and structured motifs
Half-drop Florals, animals and organic illustrations
Brick Conversational prints and horizontally led motifs
Tossed Playful icons, children’s prints and informal artwork
Directional Garments or dΓ©cor requiring a clear upright orientation
Non-directional Products that may be rotated during cutting

A non-directional design generally produces less cutting waste because pattern pieces can be rotated. Directional prints require more careful layout and fabric planning.

This becomes important when the pattern moves from yardage into custom fashion, bags and pouches or larger home-dΓ©cor applications.

8. Scale the pattern for its eventual use

The same botanical design printed on soft Superpoly fleece and smooth Satin Twill.

The same repeat will behave differently on a sash, table runner, blanket and curtain.

Before approving the tile, mock it up at realistic product dimensions.

  • 5–10 cm repeats: accessories, linings and smaller products

  • 15–30 cm repeats: apparel, pouches, cushions and table linen

  • 30–60 cm repeats: blankets, curtains, statement fashion and wall textiles

  • 60 cm and above: murals, scenic fabrics and large-format placed compositions

Do not make every motif fit neatly inside the product boundary. Natural cropping often makes a repeat feel continuous rather than sticker-like.

For one-off photographs or illustrations that should not repeat, use Design Yours to place the artwork on an eligible finished product rather than forcing it into a tiled pattern.

9. How fabric changes the same artwork

The digital file is only half the result. Texture, sheen, fibre composition and surface structure influence how the colour is perceived.

Soft Superpoly fabric

Right Gifting’s personalised blanket uses two layers of soft micro-polyester Superpoly fabric with a single-sided full-surface print.

Its soft surface scatters reflected light. Very fine detail can therefore appear gentler than it would on a smooth fabric.

For soft Superpoly:

  • Open very dark shadows slightly.

  • Avoid extremely thin pale lines.

  • Keep faces and important details sufficiently large.

  • Use clear separation between neighbouring colours.

  • Test subtle gradients and skin tones physically.

Smooth Satin Twill

RightPrints Satin Twill has a smooth polyester satin face, subtle twill structure and a reflective finish. Sublimation is the recommended printing method.

The smoother surface can retain sharper-looking edges and strong colour separation. Its sheen, however, changes with viewing angle and light direction.

For satin:

  • Check dark colours under directional light.

  • Avoid depending on near-black tonal differences.

  • Review gradients for banding.

  • Keep the pattern scale appropriate to the fabric’s fluid drape.

  • Judge a physical swatch instead of a screen mock-up.

A print can appear sharper on satin and softer on Superpoly without either output being incorrect. The fabric is part of the image.

10. Export a clean production package

Keep two versions:

Editable master

  • Procreate, PSD or AI format

  • Layered and clearly organised

  • Embedded or packaged linked files

  • Live vectors where possible

  • Original RGB profile retained

Production export

  • Exact repeat dimensions

  • TIFF or PNG for lossless raster artwork

  • AI, PDF or SVG for suitable vector artwork

  • Embedded colour profile

  • Transparent background only when required

  • No accidental crop marks inside the tile

  • No unrequested borders

  • Final scale included in the filename or notes

Use JPEG only when requested or when file-size restrictions make it necessary. Export once at maximum quality; repeatedly opening and resaving JPEG files can introduce compression artefacts.

A useful filename is:

artist-patternname-repeat-30cm-srgb-v03.tif

Include a preview showing at least a 3 Γ— 3 repeat, but do not substitute the preview for the original tile.

11. Print a test metre before scaling

  • Include the main pattern.

  • Record the final file version, fabric and approved scale.

Final fabric-file checklist

  • Physical repeat size is documented
  • Raster resolution is sufficient at final scale
  • Colour profile is embedded
  • Left and right edges match exactly
  • Top and bottom edges match exactly
  • Corner-crossing motifs have all required copies
  • No transparent seams or stray pixels remain
  • Pattern has been tested in a 3 Γ— 3 grid
  • Linked files are embedded or packaged
  • A clean production export is included
  • A repeat preview is included
  • The selected fabric has been test printed

A seamless pattern is not finished when the tile looks good alone. It is finished when the repeat holds together across the intended material, scale and product.

Prepare the mathematics first. Protect the editable master. Test the physical textile. Then let the pattern travel.
