When Fabric Becomes a Blank Canvas

A digital artwork may begin as a vector illustration, photograph or seamless pattern. Turning that file into printed fabric is not simply a matter of enlarging it and pressing β€œprint”.

The artwork must be scaled to the physical fabric, mapped within the printable width, matched to the correct printing process and prepared for every fold, crop and seam that will appear in the finished product.

This is the engineering behind digital textile printing by the metreβ€”and the difference between artwork that merely looks attractive on screen and fabric that works in the real world.

What is full-surface textile printing?

Full-surface printing places artwork across the usable printable area of a fabric roll or product panel. Depending on the project, the artwork can be arranged as:

  • A seamless repeating pattern

  • A strategically placed design

  • One continuous, full-length composition

β€œFull-surface” does not always mean that ink reaches every raw edge of the material. Fabric selvedges, printer-feed areas and production margins may remain unprinted. The true printable area depends on the fabric width, equipment and printing method.

From digital file to printed fabric

1. Start with the final physical dimensions

Textile artwork must be prepared according to its intended printed sizeβ€”not simply its size on a monitor.

Vector artwork is useful for geometric patterns, typography and illustrations because it can be resized without losing edge quality. Photographs and raster artwork need sufficient resolution at their final print dimensions.

A file may look sharp at 20 cm wide but become visibly pixelated when expanded across a 140 cm fabric roll. Always evaluate resolution at the actual intended scale.

2. Define the printable width

Every fabric has a physical roll width, but the entire width may not be available for artwork. The printable width can be reduced by selvedges, machine tolerances and fabric-feeding requirements.

Before building a full-length composition, confirm:

  • Fabric width

  • Usable printable width

  • Required fabric length

  • Pattern scale

  • Artwork orientation

  • Any production margins

These measurements determine whether motifs repeat cleanly, sit symmetrically or continue in the intended direction.

Repeat, placed or full-length?

Repeat print

A repeat print uses one tile that continues across the fabric in every direction. The edges of the tile must meet without gaps, overlaps or visible breaks.

This layout works well for garments, cushions, curtains and products that may be cut from different areas of the same roll.

Placed print

A placed print positions one or more design elements at planned locations. It is useful when a motif must appear on a specific section of a product or garment.

Placed artwork requires more information than a conventional repeat. The final panel dimensions, cutting position and orientation should be established before printing.

Full-length print

A full-length composition treats the chosen fabric length as one continuous canvas. Instead of repeating, the artwork can develop from one end of the fabric to the other.

This approach suits statement garments, scarves, decorative panels, wall textiles and artwork-led interiors. It also requires precise control over scale and cropping because the composition may not be repeatable if additional length is required later.

Choosing the correct printing process

The printing method must be matched to the fibre composition.

Sublimation printing for polyester

In dye-sublimation printing, heat converts the dye into a gas that bonds with the polyester fibres. The image becomes part of the material rather than forming a heavy layer over its surface.

This process can produce bright colour, fine detail and a smooth hand feel on suitable polyester fabrics. It is the appropriate context for the phrase edge-to-edge sublimation printing.

Sublimation should not be presented as a universal process for cotton, linen or other natural fibres.

Pigment printing for natural and suitable mixed fibres

Pigment printing can be used for materials such as cotton, muslin, linen and rayon. The fabric may require preparation so that the colour adheres correctly to its surface.

The result generally has a softer, more matte character than sublimated polyester. Texture, weave and absorbency can also influence how colour and detail appear.

How do seam allowances affect custom fabric artwork?

A seam allowance is the area between a pattern’s cutting line and stitching line. Once the product is assembled, much of this area is folded inside the seam.

This means important artwork should never be positioned directly against a cutting edge.

Names, faces, logos and focal motifs should remain within a safe area inside the stitching line. Background colours and non-critical artwork should extend through the seam allowance so that minor cutting or sewing variations do not expose an unintended blank strip.

There is no single correct seam allowance for every project. It depends on the garment pattern, material, construction method and manufacturer.

Matching artwork across complex panels

Matching a design across two sewn panels requires more than placing identical motifs beside one another.

The artwork must account for:

  • The stitching line rather than only the cutting line

  • Seam allowances on both panels

  • Fabric grain and print direction

  • Curved pattern pieces

  • Stretch or movement in the fabric

  • Ease added during garment construction

  • Fabric consumed by hems, folds and closures

For engineered garments, each panel should be positioned at actual size inside a master print layout. Artwork that continues across a seam must align at the intended stitching lines.

Even with accurate digital placement, a physical test print is recommended before producing multiple garments. Flexible textiles can shift during printing, cutting and sewing, so screen-perfect alignment should not be treated as a substitute for sampling.

Extending the process to finished products

The same artwork-preparation principles apply when digital designs move from unstitched fabric into finished products.

Custom photo blankets

For a custom photo blanket, the photograph or collage must fit the final blanket ratio. Faces and important details should remain away from hems and finishing areas, while backgrounds can extend beyond the safe zone.

Important content should be placed where it remains visible after the cover is stretched and assembled.
